Jobs via LPR Protocol

MyQ Print Server can receive print jobs from client computers using the LPR protocol. The client printer sends the job to the Print Server and identifies the destination using the MyQ queue name.

Jobs via LPR are enabled by default. For new deployments, consider IPPS where appropriate; LPR remains useful for existing print-driver environments and manually configured printers.

Enable Jobs via LPR

  1. In the MyQ Web Interface, go to MyQ > Settings > Jobs.

  2. In Jobs via LPR protocol, make sure the feature is enabled.

  3. If required, change the LPR port. The default and recommended port is 515.

  4. Click Save.

If Jobs via LPR is disabled, MyQ cannot receive print jobs submitted using LPR.

The Print Server identifies the sending workstation from the hostname supplied through LPR. The maximum hostname length is 31 characters.

The maximum job size received through LPR is 100 GB. Jobs larger than 2 GB are displayed with the size More than 2GB.

Before You Configure Client Printers

For each client printer, you need:

  • the hostname or IP address of the MyQ Print Server;

  • the case-sensitive name of the MyQ queue;

  • a suitable print driver.

The client computer must be able to reach the LPR port configured on the Print Server.

Configure LPR Printing on Windows

To manually configure a Windows printer to send jobs to a MyQ queue:

  1. Open Control Panel > Devices and Printers.

  2. Select any printer and click Print server properties.

  3. Open the Ports tab and click Add Port.

  4. Select Standard TCP/IP Port and click New Port.

  5. In the wizard, click Next.

  6. In Printer Name or IP Address, enter the hostname or IP address of the MyQ Print Server.

  7. Optionally change the port name, and click Next.

  8. When prompted for additional port information, select Custom and click Settings.

  9. Configure the port:

    • Protocol: LPR

    • Queue Name: the MyQ queue name

    • LPR Byte Counting Enabled: selected

    • SNMP Status Enabled: deselected

  10. Click OK, then complete the wizard.

The queue name is case-sensitive.

Assign the Port to a Printer

  1. In Devices and Printers, right-click the printer and select Printer properties.

  2. Open the Ports tab.

  3. Select the LPR port you created.

  4. Click Apply, then OK.

If MyQ Desktop Client is installed and the port name matches an existing MyQ queue name, MDC can automatically associate the printer with that queue.

Configure LPR Printing on macOS

To manually configure a macOS printer to send jobs to a MyQ queue:

  1. Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

  2. Click Add Printer, Scanner or Fax.

  3. Open the IP tab.

  4. Configure the printer:

    • Address: hostname or IP address of the MyQ Print Server

    • Protocol: Line Printer Daemon - LPD

    • Queue: the MyQ queue name

    • Name: a display name for the printer

    • Location: optionally enter the printer location

    • Use: select the appropriate print driver, or Generic PostScript Printer if no suitable device-specific driver is available

  5. Click Add.

The queue name is case-sensitive.

Verify LPR Printing

After configuring the client printer:

  1. Send a test job to the printer.

  2. In the MyQ Web Interface, open MyQ > Jobs and confirm that the job was received.

  3. Verify that the job is assigned to the expected user and queue.

  4. Release or print the job according to the queue type and confirm the expected output.

If the Print Server does not receive the job, verify that Jobs via LPR protocol is enabled, the client is using the configured LPR port, and the queue name matches the MyQ queue exactly.
